Dear Fellow Residents of the 4th CD,

I am Bruce Blakeman and I would like to share with you some of my thoughts on why I am running for Congress in New York’s 4th Congressional District.

Needless to say, we are facing an important election and it’s an election we must win because of the issues facing us.

I decided to run because I believe it is vitally important we elect a member of congress who will aggressively fight for the hard-working families and taxpayers of Nassau County, not someone whose policies would make it even harder for families to make ends meet.

I decided to run because I believe we need to elect a member of congress who will be a check and balance to President Obama and the Democrats in congress, not someone who will just rubber stamp everything the President does.

I decided to run because we need a member of congress who will work to enact common-sense reforms to replace the President’s healthcare law with a truly affordable plan that would help working and middle class families and seniors keep their doctors.

We don’t need someone who owes their election to Obama and Pelosi and would blindly support keeping Obamacare exactly like it is.

image002-2Millions of insured Americans have lost their health care. Now the Congressional Budget Office tells us that because of Obamacare more than 2 million more will decide to live on entitlements and government subsidies rather than work, and tens of millions more will lose their employer based health care.

I decided to run because I believe the last thing we need is a member of congress whose very first vote would be to make Nancy Pelosi speaker again and give the liberal Democrats total control of the federal government.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that while there are things we can do in New York State and here in Nassau County to try and make people’s lives better, the real source of our problems is not local… it is in Washington.

We need to change the way Washington does business.

College graduates can’t find a job and people are being laid off from work. It’s sad but we all know it. Whether it’s the price of gas or the value of our dollar, we can see that Americans are working harder and getting less.

The working middle class has once again been forgotten and is being squeezed harder every day. It’s easier to get on welfare and to get food stamps than it is to get a job, get a pay raise, and to succeed.

This is wrong and needs to change.  I’m running to change it.

We have to really worry about whether our children or grandchildren will ever enjoy the same standard of living and security that we knew and now see slipping away.

Instead of building a strong economy, creating jobs and controlling the federal deficit, Washington has given us massive spending hikes, trillions of dollars in bailouts, record deficits and record national debt.

image005Those are bills that the hard working taxpayers will be paying this year and next and for many, many years – and generations – to come, unless we do something about it now.

As President Ronald Reagan once pointed out, the problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much.  Before Washington starts imposing higher taxes on the middle class, congress needs to get spending under control, release the shackles that are holding the economy back and get our economy growing again.

Unlike any of the other potential candidates for congress – in either party – I have a breadth of experiences that allow me to truly understand the needs and concerns of Nassau County’s residents and hard working-families.

I believe in American exceptionalism.  I believe America is that “Shining City on the Hill”.  The Obama Administration  and Congressional Democrats have weakened America’s stature in the international community.  We have let ourselves be pushed around by third rate oppressive and dangerous regimes like Iran and North Korea.  Weakness invites danger.  I will work hard to make sure both our national and homeland security will be as strong as possible.

I’m a businessman, a professor and a lawyer but this is not what sets me apart from the other candidates.

What sets me apart is the knowledge and understanding I got from my other jobs – working as a bartender, a busboy, a dishwasher and on the back of a garbage truck.  It is these real-life experiences that allow me to understand what hard-working individuals and families are going through.

I was born in Oceanside, raised in Valley Stream and currently reside in the beautiful City of Long Beach.  I am a graduate of Valley Stream Central High School.  Both my mom and dad were World War II veterans.

image001-2As a Legislator, I was the Co-Founder of Hewlett House, the first Breast Cancer Learning Resource Center of its kind in America located right here in the 4th Congressional District.

I was the author of a law to revitalize the downtown business districts and transportation centers in the 4th CD.

In my free time, I am a volunteer assistant varsity basketball coach at Malverne High School.

These experiences have taught me one thing: working middle-class families are in trouble and our country is heading in the wrong direction.

“More of the same” is not the answer.  We need to change the direction America is heading.

With your support we can – and will – win the election, and we can – and will – fight to make people’s lives better.

If I’m elected to congress I will have just one overarching goal… to provide the security we need, and deserve:  economic security… national security… and to provide the security of a healthcare system that is tailored to the personal needs of individuals and families at a price that is affordable in more than just its name.

Thank you.
